Innovative Education in Brisbane – Inner City South State Secondary College (ICSSSC)
Delivering an innovative education for local inner-city students and awarded by the Queensland Government, the Inner City South State Secondary College (ICSSC) is part of the Building Future Schools Fund project.
Multiple facilities accommodating a growing student presence
The ICSSSC project involved works to construct multiple buildings and facilities which include a learning hub and plaza, creative hub, multipurpose hall, administration, staff centre, canteen, health and wellbeing hub as well as outdoor areas with car parking.
Accommodating Year 7 – 12 levels, the new ICSSSC is set to meet the growing needs of the state to provide quality and innovative education to the local community, with a projected 3,000 increase in student numbers in the next five years.
Vertical design and construction
This new school is the second vertical educational facility to be built in the Brisbane area. The design of vertical schools has common outdoor facilities integrated indoors to provide more green space, with a ‘learning oasis’ that interconnects with the nearby park grounds.
Aluminium Balustrades is proud to partner with Broad Construction who was appointed for this design and construct project, providing a range of premium balustrade and screen solutions in line with the modern and stylish design of the vertical school.

Key to providing important accessways
As a vertical school, the construction project incorporated more external stairways, sheltered walkways, as well as link bridges than traditional schools to provide access to students. Our team was tasked to design, supply and install high-grade aluminium systems made to withstand Queensland’s harsh outdoor elements and conditions in addition to being able to support the anticipated high traffic and usage.
All screens and balustrades were custom designed to complement the modern concepts and elements of the buildings, and have been fully tested to meet stringent Australian standards and safety requirements.
Here at Aluminium Balustrades, we are committed to design innovation using the latest technology and materials to deliver premium quality solutions for commercial balustrade needs. As industry leaders in commercial fabrication, established in 1973, we offer an extensive range of systems for versatile use across all commercial applications and developments.
The recent pandemic has brought on a range of challenges for the construction industry, including issues in material sourcing, lead times blowing out, and a limited workforce due to international border closures. Despite these challenges, Aluminium Balustrades continues to deliver high quality products and services, staying on top of timeframes and finding staff to ensure successful completion of projects for our clients.
