New Facades For The Herston Quarter Northern Carpark
Hutchinson Builders was contracted to work on the Herston Quarter redevelopment project for Australian Unity, including the Northern Car Park near the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Car parks are notoriously uninteresting buildings and are often considered an eyesore. Therefore, when COX Architecture came on the scene, they wanted to design something unique to elevate the building’s aesthetic appeal beyond mere functionality and turn it into an architectural feature for the precinct.
To achieve this, they contacted the team at Aluminium Balustrades to deliver an eye-catching facade that would live up to the high design standards being implemented throughout the rest of the Herston Quarter heritage precinct redevelopment project.
The Work We Did
For this project, we supplied two types of facade screens to create a finished and pleasing aesthetic for the carport. These screens also allow air circulation while controlling sunlight and rain.
- FAC01 – Swage Bar Louvred Panels
One of the types of façade screens we installed was the FAC01 swage bar louvred panel screen, supplied by Gitter Group Sydney. A series of these flat panels formed a continuous screen across parts of the facade. The aluminium swage bars were powder-coated in an innovative design that enabled it to play with light.
The different colours, combined with the way the light interacts with the surface, created a dynamic appearance that added depth and texture. Depending on the time of day and the sun’s angle, these panels could appear to change shades or reflect light differently, giving the carport a unique and eye-catching aesthetic.
- FAC03 – Vertical Batten Screens
The other type of screen we supplied was the FAC03 vertical batten screen. This consisted of vertically arranged batten-style elements made from rectangular hollow sections of two different sizes: 200 mm x 50 mm and 300 mm x 50 mm.
These were also powder-coated in four different colours to provide visual variety and sophistication to the aesthetic. The battens were arranged in a pattern that created a striking vertical element to contrast with the flat louvred panels.
A Stylish Solution For An Ordinary Space
The two types of screens will ensure ample air circulation throughout the parking lot while also protecting the cars inside from the elements, all while delivering an appealing and engaging aesthetic.
The mix of colours, materials and patterns created a contemporary and novel look, transforming the parking lot into an architectural feature rather than just a purely functional structure. Further, the powder coating ensures that the facade is resistant to weathering and corrosion, guaranteeing that it will retain its lustre for many years to come.
