Providing The Finishing Touches For Bond University’s New Swimming Pool
In 2020, Bond University, on the Gold Coast, enlisted the services of one of its seasoned construction partners, ADCO, to build a new 25m swimming pool facility at its sports centre. ADCO had previously completed 18 projects for the university, indicating a long-standing relationship built on trust that the workmanship would be of the highest standard.
ADCO immediately brought us on board to contribute our special expertise in providing aluminium balustrades, fencing and facade solutions to the project. This speaks volumes about the excellent reputation that Aluminium Balustrades has in the building and renovation sectors.
The Project
The new multi-million dollar swimming pool, which was opened in March 2021, is the only short pool in the Gold Coast area that is officially accredited by the International Swimming Federation (FINA), the governing body for international competitive swimming. This means that the facility meets the requirements for official swimming sporting events.
In addition to the pool, the new facility also features a beach volleyball court, a grandstand with 300 seats, and a 5 m x 3 m high-resolution video screen.
The new swimming pool will complement the existing 5 m Olympic-sized swimming pool that is situated adjacent. According to the university, the new short pool will be used for triathlon competitions, water polo, and building a pathway from junior to elite level swimmers.
How We Contributed
For this project we supplied and installed a 15mm thick clear frameless glass pool fence. The clear glass was chosen to ensure maximum visibility and a more pleasing aesthetic. The fence was installed using core drilling, which is a method of installation whereby holes are drilled into the ground to anchor the glass fence posts securely. This method was chosen because the drilled holes ensured greater stability for the glass panels, thus ensuring a safer solution. We also provided frameless glass gates to compliment the fence and provide a seamless means of accessing the pool area.
In this project, we went above and beyond to ensure a blend of security and safety. We provided a custom-made 1 800 mm high barred fence for the facility, paired with robust aluminium gates. This setup not only served as a strong, secure barrier but also brought an aesthetically pleasing touch to the surroundings. Recognizing the potential hazards in the swimming pool area, particularly given the constantly wet and slippery floors inherent to such a facility, we also introduced grab rails. These rails served as a valuable addition, offering extra handholds to prevent slippage and falls, thereby reinforcing the overarching safety measures in place.
In the spirit of enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the project, we added screen fencing as a significant component. It stylishly enclosed the space, effectively concealing unsightly views and integrating seamlessly with the overall design. Complementing this, we installed attractive single-stage mechanical louvres, allowing for 50% unobstructed air flow. This feature harmoniously blended utility with aesthetics, providing optimal ventilation and a visually pleasing element to the facility’s structure.
